Hammocks for the Moon
The Apollo 11 astronauts had to spend their rest periods on the lunar module floor!
Based on the experience of Neil Armstrong and company, hammocks were designed to attach to the interior of the Lunar Module for Apollo 12 and on. Hammocks where the first beds on the moon.
Made of beta cloth and adjustable with straps, the hammocks helped reduce the cooling effects of contact with the cabin floor as well as a softer support.
Christina Hammock Koch
Our favourite astronaut for so many reasons is Christina Hammock Koch.
Koch graduated from North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and Physics and a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering.
She was selected as an astronaut by NASA in 2013 and most recently served as flight engineer on the International Space Station for Expedition 59, 60 and 61.
Koch set a record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman with a total of 328 days in space.
